Restylane® - the first Hyluronic Acid Filler
|
|||||||||
Q. What is Restylane®? A. Restylane® is a clear hyaluronic acid, non-animal derived gel, similar to that naturally occurring in our skin. When injected in tiny amounts through a very fine needle, Restylane® will provide volume and restore fullness. This result is instant and produces a natural benefit that is gentle and safe to the skin. Q. How is Restylane® different from Botox® Cosmetic? A. Restylane® is a natural cosmetic product that fills in wrinkles, furrows, and enhances lips. In contrast, Botox® Cosmetic is a drug that relaxes underlying muscles that produce frown lines, forehead wrinkles, crow’s feet, lip lines, chin dimpling, and neck banding. Many patients have been pleased after receiving treatment with both products.
Q. How is Restylane® different from collagen? A. Restylane® is proven to deliver a longer-lasting effect than traditional bovine collagen. Bovine collagen is derived from animals, i.e. cow and requires an allergy test. Because Restylane® is non-animal-based, it can be administered without pretesting. Immediate treatment is therefore available. Another collagen product grown in human cell culture, Cosmoderm® and Cosmoplast®, are alternative fillers that also can be used immediately, as skin testing is not necessary. Q. How long does Restylane® last? A. Studies have shown that the average treatment results last six months or so. Evidence shows that having a touch up treatment before the product is fully dissipated will enhance the lasting effect.
Q. Is Restylane® safe? A. Yes. Restylane® has been used safely by dermatologists since 1996 worldwide. Because Restylane® is genetically engineered non-animal- based and fully biocompatible product, allergy testing is not required. The most commonly reported side effects include temporary redness and swelling at the injection site that typically resolve with two to three days. Other less common side effects have also been reported and we will discuss these with you before treatment. Q. Can Restylane® be used anywhere on the face? A. Restylane® has been used in more than one million treatments in over 60 countries to correct a variety of wrinkles and to enhance the appearance and fullness of lips. In the U.S., it is currently indicated for mid to deep dermal implantation for the correction of moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as smile lines, furrows, and marionette lines, and can refill and contour lips.
Q. What should patients do prior to treatment? A. Restylane® requires no pretesting, but patients should take a few precautions before being treated. You should avoid using aspirin, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications, St. John’s Wort, and high doses of Vitamin E, prior to treatment, because these may increase bruising and bleeding at the injection site. Q. Do the injections hurt? A. Restylane® is injected directly into the skin in tiny amounts by a fine needle, resulting in minimal discomfort. The procedure is simple and convenient, and results are practically instantaneous. To optimize your comfort during this short procedure, we may anesthetize the treatment area. Perlane® is a more concentrated version of Restylane® that is used for correcting deeper acne scars and facial grooves and for restoring facial contours. Perlane® is not available in the U.S. at this time. Patient results may vary. Each set of photos reflects the benefit realized by the person in that set of photos, and not necessarily the viewers final results. |
